5.25.07

Transfiguration was selected as part of the S.U.R.G.E Film Festival. It was nice to have the film recognized for its political and social basis. While still subtle it is certainly one of the most politically overt films I have done. Monstrum Memoria is on hold indefinitely. There are also updates in the desktops section of the galleries with 20 new desktops for your personal use. Let me know if you like them. I hope to have Transfiguration uploaded at some point in the near future but I have yet to come across a good compression scheme that does the image justice while keeping the file size low. This isn't so much an issue of the various codecs but the nature of the film imagery.

3.20.07   Transfiguration has been selected as part of the 34th Athens International Film and Video Festival. The festival runs April 27th - May 3rd, 2007. It is also playing at the YBOR Festival of the Moving Image April 19th - 22nd and played at the Humboldt Film Festival April 3rd - 7th
2.25.07   Recent updates include uploaded pictures on the Transfiguration pages. Larger versions of these images can be downloaded as desktops from the galleries section. I've also completed a number of minor fixes throughout the site.
2.15.07   Transfiguration has been accepted into the Boston Underground Film Festival. If you are in the neighborhood please check it out. The schedule should be posted sometime around the first of March.
12.10.06   While I was developing my next film, Monstrum Memoria, My students were given a project where they were to combine appropriation and abstraction. Projects could lean to more traditional appropriation concepts dealing with message oriented work, or they could go the other direction and use the appropriated sources as raw material for formalistic abstraction. If they could combine the two concepts all the better. As a proof-of-concept, I decided to create a project based on the assignment, and Transfiguration was born out of this. Josh Gumiela was given an insanely short one week window to do the sound design, and he pulled it off beautifully. It is now on its way to a number of festivals for prescreening. More info can be found in the film section of this website. I continue to develop Monstrum Memoria and hope to see it completed by May. I have also begun a new series of digital paintings. This series is an extension of my earlier illustration tests which can be seen in the galleries section. Here is a quick preview of a work in progress. The actual image is approximately 23"x25" including the border. Other updates to watch for in the near future are additions to the sketchbook section and video clips for Transfiguration. I finally, and I hope successfully, debugged this page eliminating the automatic pop-up of the mp4 file of the film I was looking for. With so many browsers having automatic pop-up blocking I didn't realize that it was still buried in the code even though I thought I had deleted it.
11.06.06   CALLING FOR HELP! I have in my possession a videotape which contains a partial clip from a film that is unknown to me. The clip contains a female character dressed to resemble a Disney/Fairytale heroin. She begins to tell a story with these lines, "Along time ago in a ghetto far far away there lived a tribe of suburban refugees". As she continues to tell her story to the woodland creatures a large white turkey keeps walking into frame. The film then cuts to a parody of the famous mountain-top scene from "The Sound of Music" where Julie Andrews spins around with her hands in the air singing. The clip then proceeds to show the woman in the scene coming across a dead horse and beating it with an antique carpet beater. The film looks like it is from the 80's. Please help me find this film in its entirety.
10.29.06   I am very excited to announce that "Reveries from Cistae memoria" is now officially part of the Journal of Short Film Volume 5 compilation. The DVD can be purchased online directly or at select locations. The film also was awarded 2nd place in the experimental category of the Nextframe festival. I am in the process of developing a new film, Monstrum Memoria. More info to come.
07.24.06

We are now in Mt. Vernon Ohio and getting situated. I am slowly getting my studio back up and running and hope to start work on new projects soon. Keep an eye out for more updates in the coming months. "Reveries from Cistae memoria" will be touring in two traveling festivals over the next year. Both the UFVA Nextframe student festival and Microcinema's Independent Exposure. If either of these tours comes to your area please try to check it out.
05.28.06   Welcome to the newly updated coil productions website. Along with the new new look comes a number of updates to the content of the site. I've expanded the galleries with old and new work, and updated the film section with new info on "Reveries from Cistae memoria." The film recently was screened at Athens International Film and Video Festival and won 2nd place in the animation category and will be playing at the Winnipeg International Film Festival in Canada June 8-11. As for the rest of the site, I hope to upload tutorials every now and then concerning processes that I am working with, and hope to have the links section uploaded soon as well as info on purchasing art and films. As you've probably already noticed I am looking for some help. If you can be of assistance in either of these matters please email me, and last if you find that there are problems with the site such as bad links or the almost guaranteed spelling mistake, please feel free to tell me.
04.18.06   Infrequent is what I would say to anyone wanting to know how often this site gets updated. A lot has happened since the last update. I am almost done with my year contract at University of Virginia. I will be teaching at Kenyon College starting in the fall. I am looking forward to the experience. Everyone who I have met at Kenyon has been very encouraging. It truly feels like I am already a part of the program even though it is only a sabbatical replacement.

"Reveries from Cistae Memoria" is doing very well on the festival circuit. It has screened at the following festivals: Black Maria Film and Video Festival where it was awarded a Jury's Citation award, Big Muddy Film Festival, Vision Film Festival, (checkout this festival out for animation! pretty cool stuff going on) Humboldt International Short Film Festival where it was awarded the Melinda Stone's Juror's Choice Award and Athens International Film and Video Festival. It was also screened as part of the Black Maria's Traveling Show in Charlottesville sponsored by the Virginia Film Society. We'll see where all of this goes. I hope to self distribute DVD's of the film soon.

I now have more space for the site so I've been able to finally add more video. There are complete streaming mp4 files of Day Films 1-4.

08.02.05

Everything is done. The thesis film is complete, as well as, the oral defense and research paper. We are in the process of packing for our new adventure in Charlottesville VA where I will be teaching. A copy of the film is available at the following site (No Longer Available) I have created for the film. It is a large file at just over 60MB.

05.27.05

Test clips and general information on my thesis film are now posted in the film projects section.

05.23.05

While reading Archetypal Imagination by Noel Cobb I ran across this, "How is an artist to answer language used against him as an artist? But can a professor of art be against a rt? It may be so. The world is a strange place. "

05.15.05

A woefully long time since the last update has passed, apologies to all. Hopefully over the next few months I will be able to update the site with more content including images and video clips from current projects. While the updates take place there may be pages that do not load correctly please continue checking back. As way of general information updates. Soulmaker has gone on to play a few other festivals including the Big Muddy Film Festival and Flicker Film Festival. The DVD of Soulmaker has been completed. Anyone interested in seeing it should email a request to me. Day Film #2 was screened at the Virginia Commonwealth University International Student Film Festival. It was one of eleven films screened. I am currently finishing my thesis film a stop motion 35mm project. Reveries from Cistae memoria is about the way memory is created and stored and and the destruction of memory via disease.

05.08.04

A quick update to the 2d gallery, including 2 more pieces from the Mandala Series and the first entries in the sketchbook section. Soulmaker went on to be honored with an honorable mention at the Humboldt International Short Film Festival.

03.28.04

Congratulations to Bob Johnson. He found the easter egg! I'll hide another one in the upcoming weeks. He will receive a signed artist proof from the Mandala Series of prints I am developing. There are now updates in the 2d gallery under the Photoshop link.

03.21.04

Major updates have arrived. Images and info on two new day films have been uploaded as well as an exclusive first look at the untitled compositing project co-created by myself and Marty Camden. Soulmaker has been accepted into the 37th annual Humboldt International Short Film Festival which runs April 3-10 2004. Information and pics for Subtleties of a Life have also been updated under the film project link.

In February I was able to purchase a Mitchell GC camera. This 35mm motion picture camera is in wonderful condition having been fully overhauled by one of its previous owners. I will be shooting my thesis project on this camera. I am still looking for a good stop motion motor and intervalometer for the camera.

My son Owen is now almost 4 months old and is more fun every day. No one has found the Easter Egg yet. Keep looking. See the 01.09.04 update for more info on this. I am trying to consistently update and improve the site. Please let me know if you experience any problems with the website. One word of warning some of the video clips and a few of the pics are higher resolution than would be recommended for a slower dial-up connection.

"Jimminy" from the compositing project.

01.18.04

The first Day Film is complete. Please learn more about this project under the film projects link.

01.09.04

Already there are updates to the new site including streaming video samples of the Big Muddy Film Festival commercial I did, as well as pictures of the installation for Port Columbus International Airport. These additions can be seen in the commercial work section. Just for the fun of it, I've hidden an Easter Egg somewhere in the website. An Easter Egg in this instance, for those that don't know, is a hidden surprise within the site. To find it you'll have to explore the site and look for it, however, it is camouflaged so it may be hard to find. You will have to click on it to access it so that should give you a hint that you will be looking for something that you can't see but that can be clicked. The first person who finds it and emails me will win a signed artist proof from the mandala print series I'm working on.

01.01.04

Welcome to the new website for coil productions. This website will be a resource for both the commercial and creative side of coil productions. This year looks to be an exciting one. I had a wonderful time in 2003 working on exciting projects with new and old clients and I'm hoping to continue growing my client base in the coming year. All ready I'm concentrating on a number of different projects at the beginning of the year, including a composting project which includes a number of different effects including green screen, matte paintings and puppetry. My thesis film is a major ongoing project and of course I'm hoping to do a few commercials for local businesses in the coming months. In the 2d gallery there are now a number of desktops for you to download and utilize for your own personal use. Please send me an email if you do, I'd like to know who's using them. I have plans for a lot of new information to come on the website that hopefully will be of benefit to oth ers. In the coming months I hope to expand the links page. Hopefully it will be a great resource to aid you in your own research or a variety of different subjects which I've been exploring also.

12.18.03

So here we go. On the creative side of things this is turning out to be a good year. Soulmaker is done and is now being sent out to festivals. Hopefully we'll hear something soon. I have postcards available. If anyone wants one drop me an email. I've just finished the poster design too. Click here for more Soulmaker info. I've also been working on a number of new short films I am calling "Day Films" as they are to be completed in one day. These hopefully will get me to loosen up a bit creatively speaking. I was awarded the Fotokem Grant which will provide film processing of my next project up to the first answer print. I hope to shoot this on 35mm. Right now I am looking for a Mitchell camera to use for the film. I plan on doing an extensive amount of stop motion animation for the project. But the biggest thing that has happened to me is that I have become a daddy. My new son Owen was born in November. He weighs 7 lbs. 15 oz., almost 8 pounds. He is healthy and growing fast. Tina is doing well too, we couldn't be more happy.

05.01.03

A lot has happened since the last update. Soulmaker is now at the lab being processed, and will hopefully be back within the week. I've taken on a freelance job doing video segments for David Rush's play Police Deaf Near Far. That productions has come and gone with much success all around. Look for video stills of the work to be on the site in a short while. But most importantly the biggest change in my life has been the pregnancy of my wife. We are due November 21.

08.01.02

If you are reading this, then I've finally gotten the site back up and running. After many mysterious failed attempts in July I returned to work at hand. I've now added new pictures from Soulmaker with more info on the process.

07.01.02

So, it's been almost a year since I updated the site and felt it was time for some new content and information. I've added an update on my current film Soulmaker as well as some portfolio samples and bio info. Links will come shortly I hope. I've also changed the font from red to light gray as some were having trouble reading the red on their monitors. The site is also best viewed at a screen resolution of at least 1024x768.
